PARI MUTUEL BETTING

Pari-Mutuel

This refers to Tote betting in France. The Pari-Mutuel is the only legal way to bet in France. There is a variety of bets available on the Pari-Mutuel, -- win, place, forecast, trio, quarte+, quinte+, accumulative bets (report) and other tactical bets.

A person must select a horse, and to bet, use the racecard number of that horse and state the amount of the bet required in Francs. Horses with the same ownership (i.e. someone holding at least 25% share), or trainer in a race in France, are 'coupled' for Win bets. Whichever of these coupled horses wins the race -- the other/s are also paid the Win Dividend. So, if a person bets on one, then they are also on the other coupled horse/s, for the Win bet only.

Like British and Irish Tote betting, the winnings are declared in Dividends, but in France, these are declared to 1 Franc for win and place bets. Horses are not coupled for Place bets, Forecasts or Tricasts in France.

Pari-mutuel betting is also available, in exactly the same way, on Trotting and Harness racing in France.

Place betting is allowed as follows:- 4-7 runners -- 1, 2;8 or more runners 1, 2, 3.

A single bet can be made as follows:-

Simple Win -- pick the winner of a race.

Simple Place -- pick a selection to be placed in a race.

Jumele ordre -- is a straight forecast and is allowed in races of 4-8 runners. Minimum stake = FF10. There is no maximum bet.

Jumele -- is a dual forecast to select the 1st 2 in any order, and is allowed in races of 9 horses and over. Min. stake = FF10. No maximum.

Couple Win -- a bet to select the 1st 2 in any order. Minimum stake = FF10 up to 200 times.

Couple Place -- a bet to select 2 from the 1st 3 in any order. Min. stake = FF10 up to 200 times.

Tierce -- pick the 1st 3 in correct order. Minimum stake = FF6 up to a maximum 20 times.

Trio -- is a combination tricast to select the 1st 3 in any order. Min. stake = FF10 up to 120 times. This bet can be made on several races each day.

Classic Tierce -- is based on the same rules as the Tierce, and is available every weekend. There must be at least 7 runners.

2 sur 4 -- This is the PMU's latest bet, in which you select 2 from the 1st 4 in any order. Min. stake = FF20 up to a maximum 100 times. There are regular payouts on this bet.

Quarte+ -- pick the 1st 4 in a race in the correct order. Min. stake = FF8 up to 20 times min stake. You can win if all four are in correct order. Also if they are in any order, and also if you select the 1st 3 in any order from your four selections.

Quinte+ -- This is the big bet in France. Pick the 1st 5 in the correct order. Minmum stake = FF10 up to a maximum 20 times. With the Quinte+, you have several ways to get a return for your initial stake. You win if you have the correct order, or any order, or the 'bonus 3' or the 'bonus 4'. The bonus 3 is paid if you correctly select the 1st 3 in any order from the five selections. The bonus 4 is paid if you select the 1st 4 in any order from your five selections. There are millions to be won with the Quinte+.

Champ Total -- This is a bet where you can cover the 'field' around your favoured selections.Make several bets on the same ticket, including your favourite horse or horses. The bet is to combine one or more favoured selections (bankers) with all the other runners. You can play the Champ Total on the Quinte+, Quarte+, Tierce, 2 sur 4, Couple, Jumele, Trio and the Trio Urbain.

Eg. You decide to bet on a Couplé Place (Place Dual Forecast) with horse number 2 as your "banker", and you wish to combine that horse with all the other runners for second place. This means you play the couplé with your "banker" and combine it with all the other runners which may come home in second place. If you bet on the Couple Place with the 'Champ Total', and the race has 10 runners -- and you have no.2 as the banker, your stake = FF90 (i.e. 9 Couples at FF10).

Champ Reduit -- This is a simlar bet to the Champ Total, except that you can do select coverage of the runners. If you pick a banker or bankers and then want to add only 1 or 2 or more, but not cover the whole field in a race, then this is the bet to do. Again, like the'Total' bet, you can play the Champ Reduit on the Quinte+, Quarte+, Tierce, 2 sur 4, Couple, Jumele, Trio and Trio Urbain.

Report -- This is an accumulative bet on more than one race. You can bet on a selection or selections to win or place in eg. race 1, and then use all or part of the returns to invest on selection/s in other races. You can bet to 'Place' in one race and still bet to 'Win' in another race from the place dividend returns, so it is quite a versatile bet.

Tic 3 -- This is an easy way to play the Tierce, the Quarte+ and the Quinte+ on one ticket. You choose your 5 selections and the 1st 3 make up the Tierce, the 1st 4 -- the Quarte+ , and the Quinte+ is of course all 5.

Combine En Formule Simplifiee -- This is a way to make a bet using more selections than necessary in a single combination. If you want to cover a Tierce, for example, using more than 3 selections to give your bet a greater chance of winning, then you can bet on the relevant Tierce ticket or give the relevant instructions in order to do this. You can do most of the Pari-Mutuel bets this way, if you so choose.

Combine En Formule Complete -- This is a way to cover the selections completely in the Tierce, Quarte+ and Quinte+.
