Cawood Floods, November 2000: Wednesday, 1 November - no through road to Kelfield!

{Cawood Bridge, early morning, 1 November} {Numbers 1 and 2 Bridge View isolated at the end of the bridge } {flotsam washed up against the bridge}
Below: Friday, 3 November: Looking across from the Kelfield side; sunrise over the church
{water on the bridge} {I paddled over in wellies to get this shot} {the line of the river bank is just visible}
{the river swirled and roared} Friday night was the highest point - the bridge was completely covered {the bridge was the local meeting point to see how high the water was}
Saturday, 4 November: Sunshine after the rain - the water had managed to invade Church End
{Nick and Simon in the background - had been sandbagging} Beyond the church, the river poured over the bank into the ings like Niagara Falls; Church End only negotiable with wellies; and spectacular sunsets {the Ouse flows over the river bank into Cawood Ings}
{the water bubbled up from a drain, wellie height} {it was a long walk through the water to the church} {sunset over the bridge}
This is how the river looked over the following week, eventually it began to go down, slowly!
{misty morning, Sunday, 5 November} {river watching before going to work, 8 November} {Saturday, 11 November, from the other side of the Ferry Inn}
{road closed - all the cars were parked on the pavement} The road to Wistow Lordship is still impassable on Saturday, 11 November - "Road Closed"; a lot of water still lying on the fields, etc - Gill Green on right; a lot of sandbags (below left) {horse chestnut trees at Gill Green standing in water}
{what will we do with all the sandbags when the river goes down?} {river going down but the bridge still shut} Saturday afternoon, 11 November - the river is still going down; sunrise during the following week was another glorious spectacle (below left)
{dawn over the river} {view from the flood wall} 18 November
{the mile straight still closed to road traffic}

Road signs bent by the force of the water on the Kelfield side

Before and after: the first shows Bridge View on 1 November; on the right, on 18 November - water still lying across the road to Kelfield, just visible at right.
(Back to home)
{almost surrounded by water} {river back to reasonably normal}
