The Yorkshire Coal Taskforce was founded in 1992 to bring together local authorities, mining unions and other interested parties to lobby on behalf of the deep mined coal industry in the Region. It works closely with the Coalfield Communities Campaign, and has representatives from local councils including Wakefield, Rotherham, and Selby, mining unions, businesses with mining interests, and local MP 's and MEP's. We have meetings with the All Party Parliamentary Coalfield Group of MP's; the Energy Minister, Helen Liddell; and power generators such as Edison Mission; we write to MP's, etc, and link with other groups such as Tower Colliery, and the campaign group from Ellington Colliery. (Report on Seminar, 9 March 2001, below)

Recently, links have been forged with "Yorkshire Forward", and members of the taskforce have submitted motions on energy policy to the Regional TUC. We have contributed to the Government's White Paper on Energy, have organised and taken part in seminars. We are actively campaigning for clean coal technology power stations to be built - this will help to guarantee the future of our indigenous coal industry whilst at the same time helping us to meet emissions targets and ensuring diversity and security of supply of energy for the nation. Britain still produces the most cost-effective coal in Europe, and coal still provides the cheapest electricity! Back to home page
