BRAY RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research on this line is incomplete and not entirely satisfactory in all respects - it requires further work to confirm the facts and complete the picture!

My great grandmother, Margaret Bray, was born c. 1874 (aged 7 at 1881 census) at Ditton Priors, Shropshire, the daughter of Henry Bray and Margaret (née Griffiths). She married Edwin George on 8th January 1896 at Bridgnorth Baptist Chapel. Edwin is described as 21 years old, bachelor, collier, living at Highley, son of Moses George, a farmer. Margaret is described as 21 years old, spinster, domestic servant, living at Ditton Priors, Bridgnorth, daughter of Henry Bray, a farmer. The marriage was witnessed by Edward Evans and Alice Reynolds. Edwin and Margaret had two children: Ethel (my grandmother) and Eva. Edwin left her while the daughters were very young. Margaret remarried a Harper. She died on 29th June 1942.

Margaret's father, Henry Bray, was born at Millichope, the illegitimate son of Sarah Bray (father unknown), and was baptised on 5th March 1826 at Munslow, Shropshire. He married Margaret Griffiths on 16th June 1856 at Cardington, Shropshire. He was a farm labourer. They had at least five children: John (1857), William (1859), Henry (1861), George (1863) and Margaret (1874, above), the first four being baptised at Rushbury while the family were living at Stone Acton, Rushbury.

Henry's mother, Sarah, was baptised on 14th February 1790 at Stoke St. Milborough, Shropshire, the daughter of Thomas Bray and Mary (née Dayus) who were married on 2nd July 1787 at Stoke St. Milborough. Thomas and Mary had five other children, all baptised at Stoke St. Milborough: Francis (1788), William (1796), Martha (1800), Mary (1804) and Richard (1808).

Thomas Bray was baptised on 15th February 1763 at Stoke St. Milborough, the son of Francis and Sarah Bray, who were probably married c. 1752. Francis and Sarah had five other children, all baptised at Stoke St. Milborough: Francis (1753), Sarah (1754), Richard (1756), Martha (1758) and William (1766).
