CARLES RESEARCH INTERESTS

Roger Carles was Lord of Albrighton, Ryton and Boninghale. He was alive at least between 1284/5 and 1319/20. He had two sons, Hugh and William. Hugh, the elder son, was outlawed by 1359/60, when King Edward III committed custody of the manor of Albrighton, previously held by Hugh, to John cotte Wade and his wife, Lucie. The manor of Albrighton was presumably later restored to the family as it appeared to pass by marriage to the Corbet family (see below). Hugh died in 1378/9 without male heir and his estate was inherited by his brother, William. In 1364 Edward III committed lands in Tarbok, co. Lancs., to William. William married Emma, daughter of Richard de Tarbok. William is described in 1369/70 as Sir William Carles, Knight of co. Salop.

William and Emma had a son, John, born in 1348. John Carles married Johanna le Strange in 1375. Johanna was the daughter and co-heir of Fulke le Strange, Baron Strange of Blackmere. Both John and Johanna were descended from Edward I. John held Acheley in 1400, when he demised it to John Barbour of Burnhull. My interest in the name of Carles stems from the daughter of John and Johanna (name unknown) who was a 13xgreat grandmother of mine. She married John Corbet of Longnor, Achley and Ryton, later of Albrighton (Longnor was inherited from the le Strange family).
