CORBET RESEARCH INTERESTS

Hannah Corbett (1643-1685/6) was my 7xgreat grandmother. The direct line shown below from her back to Norman times is, to say the least, tentative, though there seems little doubt that all the Shropshire Corbetts of this time were descended from the Normans, Hugh, Robert and Roger Corbet. Other pedigrees show different relationships between some of the early generations after Roger, son of Hugh, and as shown below a large chunk of the line is based on no better evidence than the 1623 Heralds' Visitation.

A more reliable line of descent for Hannah is via her grandmother, Jane Morton, and so departs from the Corbet male line for three generations. Click here for details of this line.

Hugh Corbet or le Corbeau. A noble Norman. Came over to England from Normandy with his sons, Roger and Robert, at the time of the Conquest. He was alive at least between 1040 and 1080. He had four sons, Hugh, Roger, Robert and Renaud.

Roger Corbet. Alive at least between 1080 and 1122. May have fought at the Battle of Hastings. Held 24 manors in Shropshire in 1086 (Domesday Survey). Children: William, Everard (Ebrard), probably Simon, possibly Roger.

Simon Corbet. Alive at least between 1136 and 1155. Children: probably Roger and Simon, possibly William.

Simon Corbet of Pontesbury. Children: probably Robert, Hugh and William, possibly also Thomas and Philip.

Robert Corbet of Caus Castle. He was Baron of Caus between 1176 and 1219. Inherited Caus from his father. Married Emma Pantulf. Children: Robert, Pantulf, Hugh, William, Nicholas and Thomas. Died c. 1222. 'Burke's Peerage' shows Robert as being the son of William of Wattlesborough and Caus, who was the son of Roger Corbet (above).

William Corbett of Acley. Children: Edmund and William. An alternative pedigree shows him as the son of Simon Corbet of Pontesbury.

The following 7 generations are obtained from the Heralds Visitation and supported by little other evidence, and so must be treated with caution.

William Corbett of Adbrighton

Robert Corbett

Roger Corbett

William Corbett

Thomas Corbett

Richard Corbett

John Corbet of Longnor, Achley and Albrighton. Married the daughter and heiress of John Carles, whose christian name is not known.

John Corbet. Children: Edward, Matilda and Mary. An alternative pedigree has these three as siblings, not issue of this John.

Edward Corbett of Longnor and Albrighton. Married, in or before 1493, Matilda Poyner. Died 1517.

Thomas Corbett. Born 1494. Married Jane (or Joan) Burton. Children: Edward (1521), Margaret, Mary and Thomas. Inherited half of the estate of Longnor on the death of his father in 1517. Died 1559.

Thomas Corbett. Married Katherine Browne, daughter of John Browne, Lisle of Morsal, c. 1560. Children: Thomas and Edward. He may have had a previous wife named Christian and by her a son, John. In 1610 he purchased the other half of the estate of Longnor from Sir Robert Harley. Buried at Leebotwood, Shropshire, on November 22nd, 1611.

Thomas Corbett. Born 1562. Admitted to Shrewsbury School, 1571. He married Jane Morton, the daughter and coheir of Robert Morton of Haughton, c. 1585. They had 15 children, mostly baptised at Leebotwood, Stapleton and Longnor between 1586 and 1610: William, Elizabeth, Edward, Robert, Sarah, Richard, Thomas, Philip, Richard, George, Anne, Roger, Humphrey, Eleanor and Ursula. Thomas died in 1645, aged 83, and was buried at Leebotwood.

Robert Corbett. Baptised at Leebotwood, July 20th, 1591. He married Etheldred (alias Elizabeth) Drewry c. 1625. They had at least seven children: Jane (1625, died 1625), Francis (1636), Catharine (1637), Thomas (1639/40), Anne (1641), Hannah (1643) and Margaret (1645). Robert was described in 1625 as a Goldsmith of London. He was also styled as being of Dorrington. He was buried on June 16th, 1669, at Leebotwood, the register describing him as "Mr. Robert Corbett, of Longnor".

Hannah Corbett, my 7xgreat grandmother, was baptised in 1643 at Condover, Shropshire. She married Henry Acton at Longnor, Shropshire, in 1671.  They had 6 children, all baptised in Longnor: Margaret (1671/2 - 1699/1700), Etheldra (1673), Hannah (1675 - 1759), Henry (1677), Robert (1679), and Francis (1682).  Hannah died in 1685/6 and was buried at Leebotwood, Shropshire.
