There is a village of Crudgington in Shropshire, lying in the parish of Ercall Magna (High Ercall), some four miles north of Wellington. However, of the 167 baptism entries of this name in the Shropshire IGI, none are in the immediate vicinity of the village (there is one baptism in Wellington). Almost all the baptism entries in the Shropshire IGI are concentrated in a small area around Bridgnorth, some 15 to 20 miles south of Crudgington, the most common being Worfield 44; Bridgnorth St. Leonards 28; Quatt Malvern 14; Bridgnorth St. Mary Magdalene 12; Neenton 10; Morville 10; and Monkhopton 9.
Records reveal a wide range of alternative spellings of the name, including Crogeton, Croginton, Crudgeton, Credgington, Crudginton and Crugynton.
My interest in the family stems from Mary Crudgington, a 6xgreat grandmother of mine, who was baptised at Wheathill in 1708 and married Richard Millichap. Prior to that the family were primarily living in Worfield, Chelmarsh and Ditton Priors, and the line has been traced back to Thomas Crogeton, a farmer at Worfield, who was born around 1425.
