My interest in the Devereux family stems from my 13xgreat grandmother, Elizabeth Devereux who married Sir Richard Corbet of Morton Corbet, Salop., c. 1470. After Sir Richard's death in 1493, she married, c. 1495, Sir Thomas Leighton of Wattlesborough. She died at Burford in 1516. Successive Viscounts of Hereford are descended from Elizabeth's brother, Sir John Devereux, 2nd Baron Ferrers of Chartley, K.G., M.P.
I can not claim to have done much research on the family. My notes are principally confined to what I have extracted from Burke's Peerage and Baronetage, 1980, which includes a section on the Baronetage of Hereford.
Elizabeth was the daughter of Sir Walter Devereux, 1st Baron Ferrers of Chartley, K.G., M.P., who was born in 1432 and died in battle on 22nd August 1485 at Bosworth Field in the famous battle of the Roses in which Henry Tudor defeated King Richard III and succeeded to the English throne. Sir Walter sided with Richard III (Yorkists) - bad move! Sir Walter had assumed the title of Baron through his marriage to Anne Ferrers, whose father William, Baron Ferrers of Chartley had died without male heir. They were married by 1446 (Anne being at most 7 years of age at the time of the marriage). Anne died on 9th January 1468/9, and Sir Walter remarried to Jane (family name unknown).

Sir Walter was the son of Sir Walter Devereux of Bodenham and Whitchurch, co. Hereford, who was born in 1411 and died in 1459. He was Chancellor of Ireland in 1449. He married Elizabeth Merbury, daughter of John Merbury.
His father was (surprise, surprise) Sir Walter Devereux. He married Maud Bromwich, daughter of Sir Thomas Bromwich, and died in 1420.
His father was another Sir Walter Devereux who married Agnes de Crophull, and died at Pilleth in 1402/3 fighting Owen Glendwr (or Glendower), the famous Welsh chief who had rebelled against Henry IV in 1401 and declared himself Prince of Wales.
His father, again Sir Walter Devereux, died in 1376.
