Doreen Liggett, Canada. doreen27@telus.net

Doreen's great great grandfather, Sylvanus Bowen Philpot, was born c. 1802 in Ludlow, Shropshire. He married Jane Tristram at Ludlow, 31st March 1823. They had 5 children, William Bowen (1824), Elizabeth (1826), Jane Bowen (1829), Amelia Bowen (1835), and Mary Ann. William cannot be traced after the 1841 census (when he was a 17-year old shoemaker), but was mentioned in a 1901 will. Did he emigrate? Where to? Sylvanus died after the 1881 census, but before Jane's death in 1887. His baptism has not been traced, though censuses say he was born in Ludlow.

The reason for the middle name Bowen is also elusive - must be mother or grandmother?

Margaret Felthouse, Western Australia. maggi@argo.net.au

Margaret's 3 x great grandmother was Phebe or Phoebe Filpott. She married John Mullender at St. Peter's Collegiate Church at Wolverhampton on 20th April 1795. Phebe would appear to be the daughter of John Philopt and Phebe Gardiner married at Chetton, Salop., on 6th February 1763. John and Phebe had at least seven children, all baptised at Chetton: William (1763), John (1765), Martha (1769), Alice (1772), Phebe (1775), Richard (1777) and Theodosia (1782).

Adele Phillpotts, London. adele@adele7.freeserve.co.uk

My grand father was William George Phillpotts born 6th February 1906 died 23rd March 1984 aged 77. He was married to Bessie (formerly Gothard) born in 1911 died 13th October 1984 aged 74. They had two children, Norman William (my dad) & Douglas Stanley. They had another child John who died shortly after birth.

My grand father William was brought up in a cottage within the grounds of Manor Farm. Apparently his father (also William) was thrown out of the big house. He had one sister called Edith/Edie, who died we think sometime in the early 1980's. My dad says that she had 17 (!) children & should still be in the area.

My father has visited some church yards in Clee St Mary & has found the following:

Mary Phillpotts died 27/8/00 who he believes is his Great Grandmother (from Manor Farm)

Sarah Phillpotts died 16.1.41 aged 77 (Clee St Mary)

William Davis Philpotts 6/6/36 aged 76 (Clee St Mary)

George Philpots (he owned a pub until he lost it & apparently locked himself in for 4 weeks!) died 25/3/39 aged 75

James Edward Philpott died 8/4/51 aged 73

Evelyn G Philpott died 4/4/70 aged 70

James Phillpott died 11/8/54 aged 91 (Clee St Mary)

Charles Phillpotts died 2/9/22 aged 81 late of Manor Farm

Edith Philpotts died 26/5/67 aged 36
