My interest in the Philpot(t)(s) family is through my great great grandmother, Mary Philpotts, who married Moses George on April 28th 1853 at Stottesdon & Farlow, Shropshire. Moses is recorded as age 26, bachelor, collier, residing at Farlow, son of John George, a labourer. Mary is recorded as age 22, spinster, residing at Farlow, daughter of William Philpotts, a carpenter. Mary's name is spelt Philpotts in the register, though she actually signs as Mary Phillpotts. The marriage was witnessed by William Phillpotts and Iyala(?) Breakwell. They had 13 children, including my great grandfather, Edwin George, whose daughter Ethel George was my maternal grandmother.
Mary was baptised on January 18th, 1832, at Hopton Wafers, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Philpots. According to a family tree received through the George family, she was born on December 18th, 1832, though this must be wrong given the date of her baptism; one might suppose that it is just the year that is wrong, and that she is likely to have been born on December 18th, 1831. Mary died at Springfield (the home of her daughter, Mary) on August 15th, 1907, and was buried at Kinlet.
It is thought that Mary's parents were William Philpot and Elizabeth Bevan, who were married on March 6th, 1826, at Hopton Wafers, and that they also had children, Martha, baptised November 26th, 1826, at Coreley, and John, baptised August 24th, 1837, at Cleobury Mortimer.
Her father, William Philpot was probably the son of William Philpot and Martha, baptised August 7th, 1803, at Hopton Wafers, his parents being William Philpott and Martha Breakwell (spelt Brekwell) (note a Breakwell witnessed the marriage of Moses George and Mary Philpotts) who were married on August 31st, 1796, at Hopton Wafers. I think William(senior) may have been the son of John Philpott and Phoebe (née Gardiner), William having been baptised in Chetton in 1763, but I need to do some more investigation on this point.
