WHITTALL RESEARCH INTERESTS

My interest in the Whittall family stems from Mary Whittall who married George Farmer on 2nd June 1788, at Ludlow, Shropshire. I believe these to be the George and Mary Farmer who were my 4xgreat grandparents, though it is difficult to be certain. The marriage register says they were both of Ludlow, though I believe neither family were from that town, though of course they could have both moved there, or just chosen to marry away from their home parish given that Mary was presumably heavily pregnant at the time (their first child was baptised less than three months later).

George and Mary had ten children: Martha (1788), Winifred (1790), George (1791), Thomas (1793), John (1795), Mary (1797), Richard (1800), Nathaniel (1802) and Anne (1804). Martha was baptised in Ludlow, Winifred and George in Norbury, and the others in Lydbury North.

Mary died in 1832, aged 70, then living at The Folley, Lydbury North. She was baptised on 26th March, 1762, at Clun, Shropshire, the daughter of Thomas Whittall and Anne (née Pendrick), who were married on13th September, 1747, at Burford. Burford and Clun are about 20 miles apart, but the marriage register indicates that Thomas was from Clun. Thomas and Anne had seven children, all baptised in Clun: Thomas (1747; married Elizabeth Smith at Clun in 1775), Richard (1750; married Martha Hamer at Clun in 1783 and had seven children), Erasmus (1754), John (1756), William (1759), Mary (1762) and Elizabeth (1765).

Thomas is believed to have been the son of Richard Whittall and Mary (née Harris), who were married at Clun in 1718, and had eight children: Richard (1718; married Mary Edwards at Bromfield in 1743, and had three children), Erasmus (1720), Mary (1722), Thomas (1724), Elizabeth (1727), Margaret (1730), Margaret (1733) and Elinor (1735), all baptised at Clun.

Richard is believed to have been the son of Erasmus Whittall and Elizabeth (née Morgan) who were married at Clun in 1682, and had three children: Richard (1684-1684), Erasmus (1686) and Richard (1689), all baptised at Clun.
