EASA Transition – Tips

Recommendation is to schedule your Airworthiness Review with Airborne Composites approximately 2 months before your current CofA expires and to register the aircraft with the CAA (G-xxxx reg) one month before that.

Read the transition material on the BGA website. You should have received similar guidance in the post.

Register the glider with the CAA using form CA-1 (sending the appropriate fee). If you have a Q letter in your BGA tri-graph and want this changing, do this with the BGA before registering. Note the aircraft can not be flown once registered if the G-xxxx markings are not displayed. We can apply vinyl lettering during the Airworthiness Review (CofA).

Get a fire-proof plate for the cockpit showing the assigned G-xxxx registration. Letters about 10mm tall.

Ensure you have an up-to-date Flight Manual and Maintenance Manual for your aircraft. Speak to the UK agent if any doubt.

Print a copy off and file the BGA Glider Maintenance Schedule for future reference. Note this is now at Revision 1.

Buy an A4 box folder, A4 ring binder and several A4 plastic wallets to start the new EASA maintenance file. Collect up all current maintenance records and present this with your aircraft for the Transition Airworthiness Review. These records will eventually contain, amongst other things:

  • CAA Certificate of Registration
  • Certificate of Insurance
  • Completed Transition Pack (we put this together, but you can help)
  • BGA Glider Maintenance Schedule
  • Aircraft Logbook
  • Aircraft Flight & Maintenance Manuals
  • Engine & Propeller Manuals (if applicable)
  • DI Books
  • List of applicable Airworthiness Directives, Service Bulletins & Technical Notes
  • Weight & Balance Schedule
  • Radio Licence
  • Type Certificate Data Sheet
  • Paperwork for any ‘released items’ (Form Ones)
  • Test certificates for Oxygen cylinders, etc.

Provide the following information (as early as possible please) :

  • Aircraft Type
  • Manufacturer
  • Build Serial Number
  • Date of Build
  • BGA Number
  • Name and Address of Owner. Note if a syndicate aircraft please say so and nominate a trustee.
  • Telephone number & email contact
  • Expiry date of current CofA
  • If turbo, engine type, serial number and date of last 5 year inspection
  • Date of last weighing

Some of the information required by the transition paperwork takes a lot of time to compile. You can help us (and save yourself some money) if you can complete the following parts of the transition pack (or at least fill in as much as you can) and present this when you bring your glider along:

  • Letter of agreement – this needs your signature.
  • Form 270 (Major Repair section) – details of any major repair work in the past, especially details of who completed the work. Don’t worry about minor modifications.
  • Form 271 (Equipment list) – Details of all installed instruments, including GPS, iPAQ, logger, oxygen, etc.
  • Form 272 (Transition Checklist) – top bit only : aircraft & owner details and signature.
  • Form 274 (Airworthiness Directives & Technical Notes) – part of the transition is to ensure that all mandatory maintenance & modifications have been completed. Some research here would be appreciated.

If your glider is a Turbo and the Solo engine is due for a 5 year inspection, please let us know. We will need to order the appropriate service kit and these do vary based on engine serial number.
