Vicar’s Letter

Jackie de Shannon first sang “What the world needs now is love, sweet love” in 1965. Two years later the Beatles recorded “All You need is Love” and there are many other songs that take romantic love as a theme; I guess it’s been a common theme ever since we learnt to sing. So in the month that gives us Saint Valentine’s Day let us give thanks for such songs. But why should the day of romance, February 14th, be attributed to either one of two martyrs called Valentine since neither had any clear connection with courting couples or lovers? But again, I guess it doesn’t matter too much and who can deny that the world does indeed need more romance?

Yet occasionally a record hits the charts whose lyrics talk of a different kind of love, such as The Black Eyed Peas and “Where is the love” of a few years ago. The lyrics are a poignant critique of today’s world and although they don’t profess to be a Christian band, their words are words of lament and compassion for a hurting humanity, as reflected by the chorus:

Father, Father help us; send some guidance from above,

'Cause people got me got me questionin', where is the love?

The kind of love that these words are longing for isn’t the soft, sentimental and romanticised nonsense that so often gets paraded but a purposeful, realistic and self-giving love. A love that cries out for justice and integrity; that gets involved in the messiness of human life; that seeks Kingdom values above all else; a love that once was prepared to give itself up and be nailed to a tree, a sacrificial love.

As February closes Lent will be upon us. As we prepare ourselves for remembering Jesus’ suffering on the cross, let us also examine just how passionate and purposeful is our love for Him and the world for which he gave up His life.

Quiet Space

If a quiet space is something you long for, Keinton Parish church invites you to be quite intentional about seeking it out! Many of us live in a noisy, hectic world that gives little time for quiet unless we make the effort to step aside. Churches have long offered a space within their communities for quiet reflection and ours across Wheathill have been places of Christian worship for centuries. Today we try and keep them open so that they may be places of peace and prayer for all who enter, with grateful thanks to a fantastic band of volunteer church openers! Thursday, 9th February and 8th March – the church of St Mary Magdalene will offer not only a space for quiet reflection and prayer but also refreshments, occasional music, an opportunity to join in with the daily offices and prayer stations to make your own prayers in your own time. It is our prayer that this will become a regular monthly feature with the prayer stations changing to reflect the church season. See the church notice–boards for future details or contact either Jane Sedgman or Trevor Cranshaw for dates/times.

Café Church

Have you ever wanted to know more about the Psalms? Well come along on Sunday 5th February to the Café Church, join us in a very informal relaxed atmosphere, have a cup of coffee and learn more. We open at 10:30 a.m. in our hall under the church and always have a good time of fellowship together.

Bible Study

The bible studies meeting have moved to 2:30 p.m. the afternoon, so you will no longer have to turn out on the cold dark evenings to join us. The next meeting will be on Monday 20th February and then Monday 5th and Monday 19th March. With a new year comes a new series of 8 studies which will be led by either our minister Rev Ken Chalmers or members of the Methodist Church. This is an ecumenical group and is open to everyone.

Chapel Toddlers

The Chapel toddler group was started in June of last year and has met regularly on Thursday mornings (except the 4th of the Month). It is a small friendly group, with lots to offer both adults and children. It is open those who are 0 – 5yrs old and they bring their mums, nannies with them. The mornings vary from week to week and it would be really good to have some new members. Why not come along one week and meet us. There is no obligation to come each week or for the whole time. Just drop in when you can. If the steps put you off, there is always plenty of help to get prams/pushchairs up and down. We will be meeting from 9.45am. – 11.45pm on the following Thursday mornings, 2nd, 9th, 16th February and 1st, 8th, 15th, 29th March.

Coffee Morning

The monthly coffee mornings are on the 4th Thursday of the month and will be on Thursday 23rd February and Thursday 22nd March beginning as usual at 10:30 a.m. The coffee mornings are run for the whole community and a warm welcome is given to all. If you are new to the area it is a really good way of getting to know people from Keinton and the surrounding area. There is a bring and buy stall which is always very popular.

Games Evening

Games evenings are open to all adults and are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month. You don’t need to be an expert at table tennis or any other games, just come and have some fun. Some very exciting games of scrabble take place as well as Uno and other board games. There really is something for everyone. Come and join us on Thursday 2nd February and Thursday 16th February (TBC) and then on Thursday 1st and 15th March. These evenings are open to everyone, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
