Wednesday's third and last season in the Alliance saw a marked improvement on the previous year. After a poor start Wednesday picked up and were in contention for the title until they slipped up in their last few matches. Wednesday eventually finished third.
The F.A. Cup saw Wednesday superbly overcoming Bolton Wanderers, league opposition, by four goals to one in front of 17,000 at Olive Grove. They then saw off Alliance rivals Small Heath in front of another big crowd at Olive Grove before they fell to West Brom.
Friendlies included a short tour of London where Wednesday were given little trouble by the early incarnations of Arsenal and Millwall, the visit of the touring Canadians who were easily beaten at Olive Grove,  and the visit of several Scottish clubs. Battlefield (of Glasgow) and Saint Mirren visited at new year while Partick thistle, Third Lanark and Saint Mirren again visited towards the end of the season. Wednesday defeated all except Saint Mirren with whom they drew two-all in the new year fixture.
And last but not least were the two games against the enemy, Sheffield United. A thumping 5-0 defeat in front of 22,000 at Bramall Lane was partly recovered by a 4-1 victory at Olive Grove in front of a disappointing 11,000.
Overall a good season for Wednesday which enabled them to claim a place in the first division of the restructured Football League, while most of their Alliance rivals were placed in the second division. The Sheffield public would have to wait at least one year for their first League Derby as Sheffield United also only gained a place in the second division.
