SCANDAL

December 1st 1962, Frank Ifield is number 1 in the singles chart, Elvis is number 1 in the EP chart and the Black and White Minstrels are number 1 in the album chart. The Beatles are hanging about the lower end of the charts with their first single, "Love Me Do".

Wednesday lose 2-0 down in Suffolk to a poor Ipswich side, despite having 15 corners.

This match would have been forgotten if it wasn't for the news that broke over a year later that three of the Wednesday players had bet on the Owls to lose the game.

Ironically Tony Kay, one of the three, was said by the press to have been the star of the Wednesday team.

The Sunday People lead an investigation which lead to criminal proceedings and the imprisonment of 10 players and ex-players, including the Wednesday 3 - David "Bronco" Layne, Peter Swan and Tony Kay (who had followed Harry Catterick to Everton by then).

All 3 were banned for life - but had the bans lifted in the early 70's. Layne and Swan tried to return to first team football at Hillsborough - but it was too late for both of them.

The question is, what would have happened to Wednesday in the 60's with Swan, an international, at the back, and Layne, a prolific goal scorer up front ?
