In 1888, after being turned down for a place in the Football League, Wednesday were approached to fill a place in the short lived, poorly organised Combination League. Sensibly Wednesday carried on playing only friendlies and cup matches until 1889 when they joined the Alliance League.
The Alliance League was considered second only to the Football League and indeed was mostly made up of Football League rejects.

Wednesday were champions in their first season, and reached the FA Cup Final (being the first non-league team to reach the final), but then slipped to last place a year later.
After the third season, the Alliance folded so that most of its teams could take up places in the new Football League Division 2 (the exception being the unfortunate Birmingham Saint Georges) while Wednesday and Notts Forest got berths in an extended Division 1.
