Wednesday's first captain (in 1867) was John Marsh, an engraver, born in Thurlstone.
In 1874 Marsh moved back to Thurlstone to be landlord of the Crystal Palace Pub. Immediately he formed a football club. Their first match was against Wednesday on October 25th 1874
500 saw Wednesday win 4-0
In 1875/6, while playing for Thurlstone against Fir Vale Marsh fell and broke his arm
The arm didn't set properly and he went to St Barts London. They didn't rebreak it but rather rebound it.
In 1877/78 Wednesday played Hallam in the SFA Cup as a benefit for Marsh and his family.
There were 2000 at Bramall Lane who saw Wednesday win 2-0.
