Derbies
When Wednesday began virtually all matches were derbies - indeed the most interesting and important matches were the so called out-of-town matches against the likes of Derby St Andrews and the Derbyshire F.A.
However rivalries quickly built up and clubs began to attract supporters.
Early city rivals were the Exchange Club, but the introduction of cup football in 1876 saw Heeley appear as Wednesday's main opposition. Other clubs, such as Attercliffe and Lockwood Brothers vied for this position up until the birth of Sheffield United in 1889.
United's ambition to be Sheffield's premier professional team quickly saw them overtake all other local sides in Wednesdayites eyes.
