Giant Killing
Below are listed occasions in the FA Cup when Wednesday were beaten by clubs
at least 2 divisions below them.
In 1920/21 the Southern League top division formed the League's 3rd division. Up
until this time the Southern League was the premier football league in the
south, with only a handful of southern teams playing in the League and so the
losses to these teams were not as bad as they might seem.
Wednesday have only lost once to non-league opposition since the war, and that
was against Wigan who were elected to the league for the following season.

Wednesday have played a number of non-league clubs in the FA
Cup. Pre WWI these were Southern League clubs that were professional and were
the equal of most league clubs.
Post WWI Wednesday seemed to have the magic touch for the teams they played
because of the eight non-leaguers, 6 were eventually elected to the League and 4
of those within a couple of years (Darlington, Peterborough, New Brighton and
Wigan). The two unlucky ones were Yeovil, who have been there or thereabouts,
and Hastings United who rolled over and died in 1985.
Of course it could have been their efforts in the FA Cup that got these clubs elected.
