Floodlights |
|
Wednesday players first experienced floodlights in 1877, when two local representative sides, captained by the famous Wednesday brothers JC and WE Clegg, played at Bramall Lane in the world's first floodlit match in front of around 20,000 Sheffielders.
The man behind this great experiment was John Tasker, a local businessman, who had been secretary of the Wednesday Cricket Club.
It was another 80 years before the club got around to installing lights on its own ground.
The club first looked at installing floodlights in 1951, but it was another 3 years before they were ready. The first match under the lights was Derek Dooley's benefit match. The first league match came at the beginning of the next season when Wednesday played Barnsley.
Wednesday played the inaugural matches under lights at a couple of other club's ground.
