Reserves |
|
Right from their very first year of existence Wednesday ran more than one team.
Initially the reserve team (then known as the 2nd XI or 2nd XII or 2nd XIV) played only friendlies, but from 1882 the Sheffield F.A. introduced the Minor Cup which was open to the lesser teams of Sheffield plus the 2nd teams of the bigger clubs.
Wednesday never won the Minor Cup, though they
did manage a 10-1 win over Walkley in the first year of the competition.
When Wednesday decided to concentrate on League and FA Cup football in the
1890's, they entered their reserve team in local competitions such as the
Challenge Cup and the Wharncliffe Charity Cup.
Wednesday renamed their reserves the Wednesday Wanderers around 1890.
The Wednesday Wanderers were founder members and Champions of the Sheffield
League.

The reverted to the name Wednesday reserves in the mid 90's.
The reserves joined the Yorkshire League in 1897 and the Midland League in 1898 (while still playing in the Yorkshire League for the season)
There was a crowd of 20,263 at Bramall Lane for the Derby in 1911.

In September 1908, the reserves met Leicester Fosse at Hillsborough (or Owlerton as it was then still known.) With the match all square at 2-2, Wednesday got a last minute penalty which Spoors scored. Much Wednesday joy as the team exits the field. However in a Pre-Clive Thomas moment of madness, the referee decided that he had blown the final whistle inbetween Spoors shot and the ball crossing the goal line - thus no goal and a 2-2 draw.
Wednesday protested and the match was replayed
at the end of the season in April. The final score was 0-0.
After several attempts to join the Central League, they were finally accepted in
1923.
Like the first team, the reserves played 3 matches before the outbreak of war. The reserve team was then suspended until 1941, when they joined the Sheffield Association League until the Central League restarted in 1945/46.
The Central League was played as a single division until 1982 when it was split in two divisions of 16 teams, then in 1984 two division of 18 teams.
Wednesday suffered relegation from the first division in 1989, but were promoted straight back in 1990 and went on to win their fourth Central League Championship the following season.
