In 1936, the LNER built fourteen engines to be named after football clubs that played in or near the railway's area.

Originally the first three were to be named Huddersfield Town, Derby County, and Leeds United but with three of the four semi-finalists being 'LNER' teams, they were to be honoured by having a locomotive named after them first (the other semi-finalist was Fulham).

The first three Class B17 'footballers' were therefore re-designated Arsenal, Sheffield United and Grimsby Town.

All the B17s were painted an unlined black from November 1941, and stayed like that until after the war, when their colour was changed to Brunswick Green.
