1878 floodlights Bournebrook Grounds, Birmingham

Attempt at floodlit football by limelight - but the limelight was inadequate - especially with a low fog.

Along each side there were 5 lights, on 6 foot platforms at 25 yard intervals.

The journolists were unable to make out the play or even the colour of the shirts.

Birmingham Royal were beaten 7-0 by Wednesbury Elwell's

Lockwoods v. Mr Harvey's team
Glasgow team v. Mr Harvey's team

had to be postponed when the electric lights were found to be not strong enough.
