Deal Tournament
Organised by
Arthur Hobbs, a carpenter with the Deal Council.
The first tournament was supposed to take place on the Deal Town FC ground -
however the FA ban on women's football was upheld by the Kent County FA (despite
proceeds going to local charity.) Eventually the Betteshanger Colliery Welfare
Sports Ground in Deal was used.
The first edition consisted mostly of local teams, but for 1968 teams came from further a field, including the winners, Manchester Corinthians.
By 1969 more than 50 teams were entered, including Start Praha and Slavia Kaplice from Czechoslovakia, the Austrian LFU from Vienna and Scottish champions, Cambuslang Hooverettes.
