Info

Cardiff City were founded in 1975 as Llanedeyrn Ladies Football Club after a local charity match.

After a few years in the South West League and a lot of success gained in 5 a side competitions, in 1981 the club decided to change its name to Cardiff.

In 1984 the club were the South West League champions and have over the years won many domestic cup competitions.

In 1993 Cardiff Ladies linked up with the League of Wales club Inter Cardiff.

In 92/93 the FA of Wales took an interest in women's football for the first time, by inaugurating the Welsh Women's Cup. Inter were successful in getting to the final to be held at the prestigious National Stadium as a curtain raiser to the men's Welsh Cup Final, being the first women's game ever to be staged there. Inter lost 1-0 to Rhyl in an exciting game supported at the end by thousands of noisy Cardiff City supporters.

At the beginning of the season 97/98, the club severed all connections with Inter Cardiff and changed their name to Cardiff County, forming links with Cardiff County Council and welcoming Councillor Doug Francies as their Patron.

The season had mixed fortunes for the club as it won the South West League championship earning a place in the play off's for the National League. After winning the semi final on penalties against Canary Racers, the champagne was put on ice as County lost to Reading Royals 2-0 in the final.

Cardiff didn't have to wait too long to secure a place in the National League for the first time in its history, as the following they became champions of the South West Combination League with four matches to spare. This achievement was immediately acknowledged by Cardiff City AFC who invited Cardiff County to become their ladies section, a high profile merger that can only benefit the club's development. The club owes a lot of their success to the organisation and management of their committee. They have for the past five years run a thriving junior section playing in the South Wales Girls League. This is a sound investment as players stream quite confidentially into the senior squad. In 98/99 the club reformed its reserve section, and last season won the South West League Division 1 title. Last season City just held on to its AXA Premier League status, but finished the season in style with a celebration dinner attended by 175 people to celebrate the clubs 25th Anniversary. As the oldest and biggest club in Wales, Cardiff City are very proud of its history, but are now working on future developments with a new project started last summer of mini-football for girls aged 8-11. Now the Club offers girls from the ages of eight right through to senior level the opportunity to play football with Cardiff City, regardless of their ability. This proving another successful development for the future growth of Cardiff City Ladies and Welsh women's football.

originally Sherbourne ???

Back in the early 90's Tony Baverstock fromed Yetminster Ladies and took part in South West League Division 2, the first game being against Weymouth Vickings, 16th September 1990, playing and captain and also then club secretary, Su Flatters, the score being 2-2. Anotehr player featuring in the early 90's was Michelle Millner, still playing and the overall leading goalscorer. Another player to arrive in March '93 was Becky Rossiter.

In 1993 the team moved to Sherbourne and became Sherborne Ladies under Nick Aplin. At the beginning of the 1994 season John Flatters became coach and the season started off with a 5-5 draw against Bristol Rovers at Eastville Park. New players came in and a certain Lisa Alford (Farthing) started scoring goals, numerous hatricks, reaching the cup final of the Dorset Cup and eventually winning the League Cup. The club grew and grew and developed a junior section under Di Vincent, and has progressed now fromt he early days as Sherborne to Yeovil Town Ladies Football Club.

One tremendous achievement in 1997 was to reach the 4th Round of the Women's FA Cup finally going out to Everton Ladies with a crowd of over 500 at Huish Park.

As Sherborne they took the chance to progress to the South West Combination League and in 1998 changed to Yeovil Town Ladies F.C and now play in the Green & White. John Flatters, although still doing some of the coaching took over as team Manager and at the end of this season, since he got involved in ladies football, will have completed 297 consecutive matches in charge, infact never missed a fixture!
