| Enfield Ladies Football club was
founded in 1985 as Merryhills Midgets, a name taken from the
primary school that the founder members attended. The club was
started when some girls showed an interest in football and their
parents decided to help them play. Seventeen years on we still
have two of the founder members playing for the first team; Emma
Meads and Melissa VanGucci. Emma's mum, Brenda, is our first
Honorary President.
The club only competed in five-a-side tournaments in the
early years, but continued to grow as more players joined. The
club has always attempted to provide football for as many
players as we can accommodate. This ethos is still true today,
we are very much a community club, providing training and where
possible games for as many players as possible.
The first real success for the club came in the now defunct
Metropolitan Police 5-a-sides, we reached the finals, which
entailed a memorable night at Wembley Arena, and then the semi
finals in successive seasons.
As the original players got older we joined the Eastern
Region League in 1989/90, for our first full season of eleven a
side. We were promoted to Division 1 in our first season. After
three years of travelling to Norwich and back several times a
season the club decided to enter the Greater London Women's
Regional Football League in 1992/3. We were slotted straight
into Division 1. In 1997/98 we gained promotion to the newly
formed FA South East Combination League, in our first season we
finished 7th, then 3rd, then runners up and finally this season
we have been crowned champions.
This completed the double with the team having won the
Middlesex Cup a couple of weeks earlier. The under 13’s and
under 11’s are also County Champions
This year we have fielded three senior teams the Reserves and
Thirds, contain a great mix of our older experienced players and
our younger players who are trying to establish themselves.
In the junior section we have fielded an Under 11's seven a
side team, as well as eleven-a-side under 13's. This coupled
together with the three senior side has seen the clubs
membership grow from the five original players in 1985 to over
100.
This season has been our most successful to date. No team
finished outside the top three in their respective leagues and
we have competed in five cup finals.
We are hoping to continue to progress and have more success
next year. The club has been much aided in recent years by the
support given to us by the supporters of Enfield FC and the
newly formed Enfield Town FC.
