Children of "Capt" George Wilton and Harriet Maxwell

George and Harriet emmigrated from Ireland and after 7 weeks landed at Pointe Levis, opposite the city of Quebec on 22nd June 1830 enroute to Inverness, Megantic County where he had a grant of 500 acres of land

George and Harriet had 4 sons and 3 daughters :--

    a) Henry Maxwell Wilton

Henry was christened in Kilmore Cathedral, Co Cavan on 26th January 1808. He was educated in Dublin and on moving to Canada he became a school-teacher before settling on a portion of the grant given to his father He apparently was an avid reader and retained a wonderful memory until his death in 1883, aged 76 yrs. He never married and left his place to Albert one of his nephews

    b) John Wilton

John was born in 1810 and along with his other brothers and sisters no record of his baptism exists in either Kilmore Parish records or Ballymachugh Parish records which I personally find rather strange.
He married Ann Leith and had 7 sons and 3daughters:-

                                  8) Ann Wilton born 1858- ?. Born in Alma, Peel County, Ontario

John, then age 20 settled on a portion of his fathers grant and in 1847 he sold out to his brother Thomas and moved to Guelph,Ontario. After 10years he relocated to Elora,Wellington County,Ontario where he lived many years. In 1878,aged 61yrs, John sold out again and moved with his family to High Bluff, Manitoba where he homesteaded
A grant of homestead was issued to John in 1878 for SE 29-12-5

John died in 1900 aged 90

I quote from an excerpt from "The Tread of the Pioneers"-written and edited by J.H.Metcalfe and published in 1932

"Any record of memoirs of the district adjacent to Portage la Praire would be singularly incomplete did it omit the name and story of John Wilton.
Born in Ireland,he came to Manitoba from Quebec in 1871 and settled north east of High Bluff. There he raised his family, farmed with more than average success, entered into the activities of the district, served as Councillor in the first joint Municipal organisation embracing town and rural area in 1879 and was subsequently first Reeve of the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie
Far away days! And yet John Wilton was of the type of cultured gentleman who can visualise the future and I have no doubt he saw what the future would mean to Portage la Prairie and the Portage plains.
Scholarly, cultured, well read and adaptable his memory is cherished among the pleasant and happy experiences of the older people. He lived to see marvellous developements, left a large family who are still carrying on the work to which he put his hand;made a very valuable and noteworthy contribution to the united organisations of the territory and was influential in moulding and developing municipal governing machinery and politics. In politics an uncompromising Conservative, only casting one Liberal vote in a long useful life and on that occassion he voted for A. T.Smith's father who was a life long friend"

      c) Sophia Wilton

Born in 1813,Sophia never married and lived with her brother on the old homestead Her life and character was above reproach .Her self sacrifice and devotion to those she loved and those that needed her always remained bright in the memory of those that knew her. She died in 1888.

       d) Thomas Wilton

Born in 6/3/1816. He bought the farm from his brother John and settled on it. He married Charlotte Leith and raised a large family of 4 boys and 10 girls ( I wouldn't fancy paying for the wedding receptions!!) Most of his family went to the United States and married there . He lived all his life in Rectory Hill and died age 78 yrs.
                       1) Maria Wilton, born 14/1/1841 in Inverness and died ?
                       2) Albert Wilton, born11/11/1842 in Inverness and died ? He married a}Elizabeth Leith b}Marie Currie c}Phoebe McTaggart

                        7) Emily Wilton, born 11/5/1852 in Inverness. She married Thomas McClean

                        9) Henry MELVIN Wilton, born 4/7/1856 in Inverness and died 1/4/1899 in Glenboro. He married Dinah Jane Currie
I have often wondered about the derivation of the name MELVIN. Where I live here in Co Fermanagh in Ireland approx 20 miles away is a lake where I spend a considerable amount of free time fishing for trout and salmon. It is in Co Leitrim which is adjacent to Co Cavan the ancestral home. It's name is Lough MELVIN---Is there some far off connection???
                         10) Francis E. Wilton, born 25/4/1858 in Inverness She married William Leigier.
                         11) Elizabeth Julia Wilton, born 13/2/1860 and died ?.
                         12) Eva Janet Wilton, born January 1862 in Inverness and died 22/6/1850. She married John Coe Towle.
                         13) Letitia Wilton, born 17/1/1864 in Inverness and died ?
14)William Wickes Wilton, born 24/12 /1866 and died 19/4/1869 in Inverness.

          e)  Anne Wilton

Anne was born in 1820 and died in 1883. She never married and spent all her life in the old homestad.
The above are all recorded in the 1821 census return for the townland of Crover, parish of Ballymachugh ,Co Cavan ,Ireland (see website "Capt George Wilton and Roger of Huntley)

         f) George E. Wilton

George was born in 1825 and married Francis E. Wilton who was described as a daughter of another branch of the family, She indeed was from another branch of the family-- she was a daughter of Roger Wilton of Huntley and her grandfather was William Wilton brother to both Capt George and John Wilton of the Flatt ,my g,g,g,grandfather.
George Wilton married his 2nd cousin Frances Wilton
This family is fully documented under Roger Wilton of Huntley

            g) Harriet Wilton

Harriet, born ? 10/8/1822 and died 21/2/1901  was described as the ambitious member of the family and left home quite young. She afterwarda married an American, Anthony Patterson before settling in Detroit, Michigan They had a family of 5 boys and 3 girls.
Anthony is described in the above transcript as being American: --He wasn't he may well have been from Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh No one knew anything about Harriet until I received an e-mail from Sue S. who lives in Detroit.Sue is a direcr descendant oh Harriet.

There is also the little incident of George's relationiship with Mary Brady--    George son of George Wilton and Mary Brady, christened in Kilmore Cathederal on 4/9/1804-- a bastard!!!    I wonder what Harriet Maxwell thought of this.
