I have included Roger Wilton of Huntley on my web pages mainly
because of the story of how we found out who he was.
In the original notes which Andy Wilton sent me,it had been passed down
through the generations that he was a brother of "Captain" George
Wilton and "Capt" George's youngest son, also named George had
married a Frances Elizabeth Wilton from another branch of the family.
Frances Elizabeth Wilton certainly was from another branch of the family(see
below). She was a daughter of Roger of Huntley
and Roger was a nephew of "Capt" Georgeand also of John (my
g.g.g.g.grandfather).
Despite endless searching here in Ireland(including Kilmore records, censuses
etc)I haver never found one clue of his existence. However the vital clue
came from the book "Men of Upper Canada,Return of the Militia Men".
In this book Roger Wilton's father and mother
are given as William and Frances.and Roger
belonging to the 1st regiment Carelton Militia
William Wilton was "Capt"George's brother along with my g,g,g,grandfather
John of the Flatt
My interpretation of Kilmore church records and the 1821
census is that William Wilton was probably married twice. His first
wife was called Frances and they lived in the townland of Legaland
There is one baptism listed in church records to this marriage:-
Emilia born 23/3/1806 to William and Frances of Legaland. There is no
mention of Emilia in the 1821 census
Kilmore records 11 and 13 yrs later mention two baptisms i.e. John Haselip
andWilliam to William Wilton and his wife Eliz of Ballyhilland Eliz became
his 2nd wife Another son James was baptised on 6/10/1822
The 1821 census only lists Wm , Eliz and son William
,age 2
Frances , his wife and Emilia from the 1st marriage and also John Haselip
from the 2nd marriage must have died before the 1821 census.
Roger as mentioned in the book "Men of Upper Canada,Return of the
Militia Men" must have been a son of William and Frances Wilton of
Legaland

The above is rather indistinct because of the quality of the original
, but basically it says:-
Roger Wilton ---?occupation but possibly farmer---Ireland---church of
Eng-----age
Eliza Wilton----- Ireland--church of Eng---age
Frances Wilton-----Upper Canada------Ch of Eng--age
George Wilton----Upper Canada---Ch of Eng---age
Descendants of Elizabeth Rebecca Murphy and Roger Wilton(and
I gratefully acknowledge the contribution of Verna Mckinnon,Kelowna,Canada
for the following information:-)
Generation No.1
. Elizabeth Rebecca
Murphy was born 1797 in Ireland, and died April 03, 1883 in Inverness
, P. Q, Canada. She married RogerWilton Abt.
1820 in Ireland
Notes for Elizabeth Rebecca
Murphy:
Elizabeth is on the 1851 census for Ontario, Huntley township, in household
of Roger Wilton, and is 54 years old.
Elizabeth is on the 1861 census for same place and is 64 years old.
There is a Rhody Wilton on the 1871 census
for the above twp, with an Elizabeth as 73 yrs old, and I suspect these
are Roger and Elizabeth
. Elizabeth died in Inverness, is buried there, I suspect she was living
with her daughter Francis Elizabeth after the death of Roger
. The person shown as witness at the death is Thomas Wilton.
I have not been able to find her on the 1881 census in Inverness, but
that doesn't mean anything.
More About Elizabeth Rebecca Murphy: Burial: 1883, St.Stevens Cem.,
Inverness, Que.
Notes for Roger Wilton:
Roger is on the 1831 census for Ontario,
Huntley township, as farmer
. Roger is on the 1851 census for same place,
and is 55 years old.
Roger is on the 1861 census for same place,
and is 69 years old.
Roger is in the book "Men of Upper Canada,Return
of the Militia Men" as 35 yrs old in 1821. I suspect an error in the
age or the date. Or this is a different Roger Wilton, or it could be a
Roger Wilson, there is so many contradictions in the various books and
records I have read. There is a Roger Wiliton
(this is undoubtedly an error in spelling of the name) on the 1822 census
for Huntley shown on the Genweb page for Carleton county as being married
with wife and daughter. This would put Frances E. as born in 1821 and
I suspect the date is about right, or there is another daughter not found.
There is a "Rhody" Wilton (and wife Elizabeth) on the 1871 census for
Carlton county, what it means I don't know, but it must be Roger
