FLYING THE CHOPPER

Photograph Of Rotorway Exec 162F
I suppose my dream is to own a helicopter, and indeed, at the time of
writing [November 2004], my beloved Piper Cherokee is up for sale and Debbie and
I have been "test driving" some vertical flying machines. The
photograph above, is of G-BZOM, a 1998 Rotorway Executive 162F owned by
ex RAF flying instructor John Jackson.
Back in August, John took us flying in G-BZOM over the fields of
Shropshire. He showed us how the pretty little Rotorway hovers, climbs
to 1000 feet in an instance and even performed some aerobatics with
wing-overs and an autorotation from 800 feet. Autorotations are
practised by rotorry-winged pilots in case of engine failure, basically
the throttle is closed, a 60 knot forward and 1600 feet per minute
descent maintained until the chopper is flared for landing at about 20
feet above the ground... I wasn't even aware we'd landed, the touch down was
that gentle!
Broadband users can view and hear a 6.5 meg video by clicking the link below, it
shows G-BZOM warming up for take off into the hover-
