This model is set in the steam era of 1950’s, is a through working terminus, on line from Bodmin Road to ‘withered arm’ of Southern Railway at Wade Bridge. It is based on measurements taken at the site. The main station building is still in existence as a railway preservation area. All other buildings have been recreated from photographs and descriptions published in books. These have been covered in real stone gathered from the site. The track work is Peco, but all the points have been hand built. Stock is from Farrish, Peco and Minitrix. The operating sequence is based on the timetable of the latter part of this period.
Congleford is located in an area to the South West of Manchester on a truncated former Cheshire Lines Committee (CLC) line. Freight is the mainstay of the line with various chemicals forming the bulk of the services to and from centres such as Warrington and Northwich. A peak hour passenger service, operated by a DMU, runs from Stockport. The period modelled is from 1977 - 1980.
Melcombe Abbas is the terminus of a little known Somerset and Dorset branch line in Southern Dorset. The trains are short as befits such a location, as with the stock, it would seem being usually provided by the Southern Railway, although in reality it is dependant upon which of our members are operating the layout. It has been known for the Great Western influence to even spread this far south on the S&D.
East Lynn is an imaginary small town and seaport, situated in Northwest Norfolk, served by the Great Eastern Railway. Principal trains head south, departing over the single line swing bridge towards a junction some distance away, to the main line toward London. A branch line heads Eastwards across the country and provides a connection to the local gasworks. The Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway has running powers over the branch giving it access to East Lynn. There are no ready to run models available for British ‘S’ scale. All the locomotives, rolling stock, track and buildings have been hand built. True scale standards are used for the track and wheels.

Springfield is a small fictional terminus station with a freight yard and loco shed, situated somewhere at the end of a branch line diverting from the West Coast Main Line. The scene is set in the colourful 1990’s with almost any form of modern image diesel making an appearance. There is plenty of action on the layout with freight trains shunting in the small yard and frequent loco hauled passenger trains, DMU’s and the occasional steam special.
The layout portrays a very small sub-yard in a big U. S. city. Which city depends on the stock being run. The track plan is minimalist and mirrors layouts from Model Railroader. At only six foot long, can you really say you could not find space for a workable layout.
The Lulworth Branch leaves the Waterloo - Weymouth main line somewhere between Wareham and Wool. The only intermediate station near the army ranges is called Lulworth Road. A spur line also serves the army camp, operated by the war department.
Bulverhythe, once Bolewarthethe or Bulverheeth; in modern English ‘the landing place of citizens’. Once considered a ‘limb’ of the Cinque Port of Hastings, the town nestles in the shelter of a headland known as ‘Gallows Head’ there is a small harbour with a pier and wharves. Over the centuries the coastline has altered considerably, ‘Gallows Head’ has disappeared, Bulverhythe is now a suburb of Hastings & St. Leonards and historical fact begins to blur with model fiction.
The inspiration for this layout was found in ‘Great Western Engine Sheds 1947’ by E. Lyons. When I studied the track plan of Chippenham Engine Shed, I knew, that I had found what I wanted. For example, something a little bit different. I decided not to reproduce everything to Mr. Lyons track plan, but to concentrate on a small shed with a turntable, which is located next to a mainline, as an excuse to run tender engines. There are more roads now around the turntable, plus the hidden sidings at the back and sides of the layout.
