The Aardvark Nest
Below Ground

This section is dedicated primarily to the underground world of Devon and Cornwall's disused metalliferous mines. These were mostly small mines. Many were dug by single families as a sideline to their main occupations like farming. Others were large enough to employ a few dozen men and just a very few of the more recent ones were relatively large.

The area is renowned for it's wide range of different minerals. Although relatively few really prize specimens came from there, by global standards, the variety of different minerals exceed that of almost anywhere in the in the world.

Having said that, this section does contain some mines elsewhere in England. Small sections are also included on our visits to Wiltshire and The Yorkshire Dales.
