Pyrotechnics Safety Policy: Pyrotechnic charges are essentially electrically fired stage flashes, which can take the form of simple 'puffs' to cracks and bangs, with a little or a lot of instant light output and smoke. As with all such effects, the UTMOST CARE must be taken when setting and operating any pyrotechnic charge. NEVER fire a charge unless the operator can clearly see that there are no cast members close by. NEVER point flash pots into an audience NEVER
site pyrotechnics close to combustible scenery NEVER try to use or set pyrotechnics unless you have had proper instruction by a competent and approved stage technician NEVER load a cartridge whilst still connected to the firing system – ensure that the person loading the effects has the arming key on a lanyard around their neck NEVER lean over a charge when loading
ALWAYS treat pyrotechnics with RESPECT ALWAYS be careful if using loose pyrotechnic powder ALWAYS protect the stage surface on which the flash pot is sited ALWAYS use an approved firing unit with a key-operated safety switch - NEVER improvise ALWAYS fire a sample of each effect being used to demonstrate to cast/crew what to expect ALWAYS ensure that cable feeds are tucked tidily away from walkways/access routes on stage
The Abbey Theatre technical staff will source commercial pyrotechnic (Le Maitre) effects on request. Whilst use of pyrotechnics is currently not subject to licensing, the Abbey Theatre reserves the right to refuse permission to use either a specific effect. The theatre also reserve the right to vet any persons who wish to fire pyrotechnic devices and refuse permission to do so. NO persons under the age of 18 shall be permitted to prepare or fire any pyrotechnic device. A demonstration of competency will be required before pyrotechnic equipment is used in-house or hired out.
