Asbestos at the Abbey - Conclusion

Well, thanks in the main to the HUGE support shown by member groups, visiting groups and the public, not to mention a lot of press coverage, the NBBC Cabinet finally voted in September 2003 to confirm the funding to rescue the Abbey Theatre from closure.

£75,000 was tabled by the NBBC, and following discussions with officers of both the borough council and the Arts Council, the cash was well spent on the areas that were sorely needed.

This meant that the refurbishment of the foyer bar area, originally planned for Summer 2003 was able to be completed by November, when the doors to the venue were officially re-opened. All of the key items of technical equipment were replaced, as were the 7 rows of seats that were ripped out as being contaminated.

Thanks must again go to the supporters of the NAC and the Abbey Theatre, for without their help we believe the building would even now be standing empty and unused.

THANK YOU!
