Disabled Access and Facilities
|
Whilst the complex that is the Abbey
Theatre & Arts Centre was not originally built with provision for the
disabled customer/user, we have over the years endeavoured to improve
the facilities to allow those with disabilities at least some measure of
assistance. |
|
 |
Access to the venue is simple enough.
The frontage of the building has a wide dropped-kerb to the paved area
before the main double doors. There is no step to navigate when entering
the premises, and the foyer bar area is on the same level as the
entrance.
Toilet facilities are again available on
this ground floor level, through the end double doors, up a very slight
incline. |
| The auditorium is accessible via two sets
of double doors opening from the foyer. There is a slight but easily
navigable incline. In the summer of 2007, NAC
volunteers removed the front step of the auditorium rake, thus
increasing the space on the flat available for wheelchair customers. The
new safety rail also provides sturdy assistance for any patron who is
able to make a short trip from their wheelchair, should they wish to sit
in the front row (row B).
Should there be any wheelchair bound customer who
requires a carer to sit with them, we can provide a suitable seat for
one carer per wheelchair (if requested in advance). Note however that
this is restricted to one carer per disabled patron, as space can be
limited. Please also note that carer's seats must be paid for as one
normal ticket, and are not to be used for non-essential support staff,
and the facility can be denied by management if this is abused. |
 |
|
  |
The theatre does not at present (late
2007) have a functioning system for assisted hearing, but this is in the
process of being scoped and should be installed by early 2008 at the
latest.
A portable unit, for use in places such as our box
office, should be in place by mid November 2007. |
| Unfortunately, it has not been possible
to improve access to our first floor spaces, the Etone Lounge and Milby
Room. Due to the age of the building and restricted space in the areas
that serve our venue, it has not yet been feasible to provide lift or
other assisted access to the upper half of the premises. We continue to
investigate this as a future option, however. |

any questions or concerns around any aspect of the disabled facilities
at the Abbey Theatre, please don't hesitate to
