Delwyn Jones Tournament 2nd September 2001

The day kicked off early for all the volunteers, without whom there would not be an event.  8.00am was the time everyone met at the park, with the constant threat of rain keeping everyone on their toes.

The fields had to be taped off, signs put up, start to cook the food - nothing like it to bring out the team spirit between all the volunteers.

The day was officially kicked off by the Mayor of Abertillery.

Due to the news that a number of sides would not be coming caused the committee extra work in rearranging fixtures, but we managed to start the day on schedule.  The games kicked off at 11.15am with four pitches accommodating the four age groups.

The standard of rugby was yet again of a very high standard, with all sides attacking at every opportunity.

At the top of the extension the latest recruits to the game of rugby union took the field for the first time and each and everyone of them having smiles like Cheshire cats - plastered all over their faces.

This from a rugby supporter is good news, with the treat of soccer hanging over many Mini & Junior sides.

There were four sides invited, those being Treharris, Dowlais, RTB Ebbw Vale and Newport High School Old Boys (NHSOB).

During the day we had visits from Mr. Mostyn Richards (WRU development Manager and our local DDO Mr. Ron Shottle.  Ron kindly brought the Welsh Dragon Trust Rugby Mascot who breathed fire into the crowd and had photos taken with both players and spectators.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the arrival of Rupert Moon, who's web site can be found by clicking on www.RupertMoon.co.uk
He was kind enough to interact with players and spectators and signing autographs - which must have given him writers cramp.

The rugby meanwhile was reaching a dramatic climax - the outcome of both the under 9's, 10's and 11's being decided by the last game.

The Trophies were presented by Rupert Moon, after the father of the late Delwyn Jones (Mr John Jones), made a moving speech of thanks to all who contributed to a very successful day.
All that remained was the clean up before meeting everyone back at our newly named clubhouse - The Pendragon (formally known as The Rugby Club).

We would like to thank everyone who helped throughout the preparations leading up and throughout the day of the tournament, without which there would be no tournament.

Also we would like to thank Mr. Brain Beatie for volunteering to man the microphone all day, in the main stand.

A special thank you to all the sponsors and people who donated money to this charity event.

Brief History of Delwyn Jones

Delwyn joined our club as an under 8’s player and immediately became one of the more talented, committed and popular players, loving the rugby and friendship. The following season, as an under 9’s player, Delwyn adapted easily to the extra skills required and looked set for a very enjoyable and colourful rugby career. Unfortunately, that season was to be his last.

In April 1994, he fell ill with breathing difficulties, and after tests, it was discovered he had blocked lungs, the condition was getting worse and was now affecting his heart. Delwyn quickly deteriorated and desperately needed a heart and lung transplant, and was placed on the waiting list.

Tragically, for his parents, two younger brothers, school-friends, team-mates and everyone who knew him, Delwyn died on the 28th September, his tenth birthday.

So as a tribute to Delwyn, our club try and hold an annual tournament, in his memory. Half of all profits are donated to charity, previous beneficiaries have been Harefield Hospital, the Hospice of the Marches and last year a local girl who needed money to purchase a electric wheelchair and accessories.

This year’s tournament will be held on 2nd September 2001, at Abertillery Park. So if you would like to donate or contribute in any way to a good cause and to the memory of a very special boy, please contact any of the committee members.
