Acro Logic: Advanced Transport Telematics
|
What is Advanced Transport Telematics?
Advanced Transport Telematics, or ATT, refers to the application of
Telematics to road and public transport problems.
ATT has been used within the European Union, particularly in research
and development programmes, to
improve transport safety, efficiency,
and its impact on the environment.
In the United States the use of similar technology has been
called Intelligent Transport(-ation) Systems (ITS). However, as with many
modern-day professions the terminology quickly changes. So tomorrow
it may be called ...
Irrespective of the terminology, these technologies are being
used/developed to:
- manage the demand for road transport usage
(e.g. electronic road pricing / toll roads;
increased use of public transport)
- improve the flow of traffic and minimise delays
- reduce fuel consumption and emissions of air pollutants
- warn drivers of hazardous conditions and accidents
(e.g. variable message signs on motorways
)
- detect vehicles breaking the law
(e.g. red-light and speed cameras
)
- automatic vehicle control: braking, acceleration and steering
(complete automation is unlikely to be widely used in the near future,
though such a prototype already exists!)
- provide route guidance/navigation assistance
(e.g. Carin)
- monitor and control traffic conditions
- disseminate information on traffic conditions to drivers
(e.g. Traffic master)
- improve public transport efficiency
- disseminate public transport information to the public
- integrate road and public transport services
- monitor, predict and control air pollution using the above systems
