He was actively involved in the research, design, demonstration and evaluation of ATT systems. In particular, tasks included:

  • providing technical consultant services
  • report and proposal writing
  • system specification
  • software development
  • evaluation
  • planning
  • liaison with partners

  • Projects

Dr Bostock participated in several European telematics projects, particularly in the DRIVE I and II research and development programmes, and a number of US telematics projects. The projects varied across the whole telematics spectrum, with a focus on road transport applications, such as:

  • specification and evaluation of a pan-European roadside data communications network
  • evaluation of world-wide developments in advanced telematics system architectures
  • recommendations for the development of a standard pan-European system architecture
  • the application of telematics to the prediction, monitoring and control of traffic pollution
  • data exchange between information centres and dissemination to mobile users
  • He was also responsible for the administration of the company's computer facilities and their strategic development.

    Business Systems

Dr Bostock has experience of the strategic planning and analysis processes used to develop systems for use in business, education and industry.

In terms of particular office applications, he has experience in:

  • word processing (Word and Wordperfect)
  • spreadsheets (Excel and Lotus 123)
  • databases (Access and dBase)
  • presentation and graphics (Powerpoint, Harvard Graphics and CorelDraw!)
  • schedule/planning (Schedule and Wordperfect Office)
  • Internet: Web (including HTML authoring), E-mail, newsgroups
  • network services and administration
  • interactive multimedia systems
  • modern telephony systems and voice mail
  • specialised/customised applications

  • Educational Systems

Prior to Acro Logic, Dr Bostock was the Information Manager at
    Clarendon College.

    Responsibilities

He was responsible for the strategic development of information systems, and the development and maintenance of all IT systems. In particular, this role included the following responsibilities:

  • development of the College's information policy and IT strategy
  • providing technical advice on state of the art technologies and strategies
  • liaison with external partners and participation in national IT initiatives
  • implementation of the IT strategy
  • overseeing feasibility studies
  • project management
  • writing system specifications and invitation to tenders
  • evaluating and improving existing systems, and business process re-engineering
  • specification of the IT infrastructure for a new campus
  • Technology

Dr Bostock introduced a state of the art data communications network to support the immediate and the future requirements of the College (e.g. the use of telematics to deliver: interactive multimedia applications; distance learning; and the collection and dissemination of management information).

    The technology introduced included:

  • structured cabling
  • modern telephony and voice mail services
  • distributed workgroup hubs
  • ATM ready, switching backbone hubs
  • fibre optic links and ISDN router technology between sites
  • Internet services
  • multimedia authoring system
  • CAD suite for the design of textiles and garments
  • Other key developments included strategies and technologies for distance learning, and providing information services via an Intranet.

    General Experience

Dr Bostock has achieved a great deal and demonstrated that the successful implementation of an IT project is dependent upon a clear understanding of the appropriate technologies, and the requirements and working practices of the end user. He has a clear understanding of Information Technology, and the processes required to determine the users' requirements and identify their working practices - key points in a systems development project.

    Innovative Systems and Special Projects

Virtually all of Dr Bostock's career has focused on the development of innovative strategies and systems. This is illustrated throughout all of the sections on this page.

    Claims to Fame

And now for some light-ish relief, and a bit of nostalgia - Dr Bostock's 'Claims to Fame'.

    Name dropping
    - who me?
    • automation of an instant coffee factory, owned by the world's largest food company

    • a statistical process control system for a very well known tyre manufacturer

    • development of IT systems for the 'best' general FE college in England

    • provision of IT services on behalf of the Langham Hilton hotel, London
    Technology
    ahead of its
    time
    • development of one of the first electronic voice messaging systems

    • development of an early feature phone with integral VDU, keyboard and data communications link
    European
    standards
    in Telematics
    • providing recommendations to the EU for a pan-European Telematics system architecture to support technological applications in vehicles, on the road, and for public transport

    • development of a standard communications protocol and data format between roadside Weigh-In-Motion systems and a generic roadside data communications network - used primarily for traffic monitoring and control (proposed as a pan-European standard)
    Environmentally sensitive
    transport strategies
    • design of innovative traffic pollution control strategies

    • design of one of the most advanced traffic pollution computer models

However, Dr Bostock is far from famous - but he is hungry for his next claim to fame... It could be you!

Monitoring and Control of Traffic Pollution

Dr Bostock conducted pioneering research in this area, and also gained his Ph.D. modelling the impact of innovative environmentally sensitive traffic control strategies. He played a key role in two European projects which developed and tested strategies and systems to monitor and control road traffic pollution. The projects focused on the specific problems within Athens, but also developed recommendations that could be applied to other European cities.

    Four strategies were designed:

  • environmentally sensitive traffic signal timings
  • dynamic traffic rerouting
  • the introduction of low emission vehicles into the traffic fleet
  • environmental area licensing - access restricted to low emission vehicles
  • Dr Bostock developed an advanced traffic pollution computer model called Premit to evaluate the impact of these strategies on air pollution. He also developed specifications for the technology required to implement these strategies.

The second project conducted real system demonstrations in Athens to evaluate the technology and the users' response to it. This resulted in the development of recommendations for environmentally sensitive traffic control strategies which could be applied in Athens and other European cities.

    Process Control Systems

At Chronos Richardson, Dr Bostock was responsible for software development and commissioning of projects which automated industrial processes. The software was developed on a real-time process control operating system. He developed specialised software and commissioned systems that provided the following features:

  • plant control
  • statistical process control
  • data capture/logging
  • user interfaces
  • graphical illustration
  • alarm reporting
  • data communications
  • database facilities

  • Telematics

Telematics, yet another piece of jargon which refers to: the combination of Informatics (Information Technology) and Telecommunications.

The sections of this page illustrate the wide ranging experience and expertise that Dr Bostock has gained in the area of Telematics. In addition, he also participated in a number of pioneering development projects at GPT (previously know as GEC Telecommunications). These included the development of a voice messaging system, data communication facilities and feature phones.
