Telephone No.251LB

GPO Telephone No.251LB

(Post Office)

1946

(Originally a Telephone No.121 from Plessey - 1925)

The first wall-mounted telephone with a combination handset was the Telephone No.221. My example (pictured), a Telephone No.251LB, is a variant of that basic version. These models were rebuilt from the old Telephone No.121 which used a separate Bell Receiver and microphone. You can see the plugged holes at the front of the case, above the dial blanking plate where the microphone was fitted. The whole of the wooden case should be painted black, to match the handset.

This instrument was an extension phone on a Private Manual Branch Exchange (PMBX), hence the lack of a dial. It was still in limited use, along with my Telephone No.3, in 1982.
