1950 Split Beetle
This project car is here to stay! Purchased from Keith Seume (ex VolksWorld magazine) in 1994, who imported it from Sweden. The car was built on 2nd June 1950, and is a Deluxe Export model. It was found in a barn where it had been for about 25 years. Original condition was prett y good, though it had what looked like the remains of a mouse nest on the luggage panel behind the fuel tank, the result was a hole about 12" x 6"! Missing from the car were the grooved bumpers, the ZAR reserve tap plate, original tail-lights, and the or iginal engine - though it came with a seized Dec '50 unit.
First job was to get the car registered, and then on the road just to experience life in the slow lane for a while! Summary: crash gearboxes are no fun!
After a month of road use, the car was stripped down in readiness for restoration. Work commenced and continued for about a year, and then stopped when our first house purchase came along. Unfortunately the car is still unfinished, but I hope to get on with it once the my buddy's '56 Oval is completed.
