1956 Oval Beetle
I purchased this car as a basis for a hot street / 'Old School Cal Look' project in 1994. It is a LHD August '55 ('56 model year) Deluxe Sunroof import from Sweden, where it was found in a breakers yard in a fairly sorry state. Upon closer inspection, it transpired that the car had been involved in an accident sometime in it's life, and hit in the side on the drivers side, but pulled out and repaired. This put me off slightly, and I now started to think about something earlier so the car was sold.
Friend Lee 'Webmaster' Durrant bought the car, and work commenced on and off over the next couple of years. Lee's plans were similar to my original ones: hot motor, nice stance, the right wheels and fun to drive! I took on the job of panel work and welding. The accident damage was repaired with a section of roof from a scrap '54 shell. Because we could not locate a much needed RH front quarter panel, a complete front clip (front quarters and spare wheel-well) was grafted on. This came courtesy of Karmann Konnection from a breakers yard in California.
The car has also received new heater channels , an NOS bonnet and the usual repairs. The car will also be blessed with: a 2110cc dual Dellorto motor, all round disc brakes, US spec bumpers, the obligatory Autometer Monster Tach, narrowed front beam and detailed original style Porsche Fuch wheels.
