1968 1200 Beetle

This car was my daily driver for about four years, during which time it went though a fair share of modifications.

The car started life as a stock fairly low mileage '68 1200 (standard) Beetle with full service history from new. It was one of the last 1200's to come with 6 volt electrics I am told. Though mainly rust free, it did unfortunately have several dents, including some in the roof. The original 1200 engine soon made way for a second 1200, a 1500, a 1679 and finally a 1776 with all the right bits. Obviously the car was lowered all round and converted to 12 volt electrics fairly early on. I also installed front disc brakes, type 3 rear drums and a 1500 gearbox. At one stage I even had Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 full electric leather seats too, but that's another story.....!

For the last 6 months of road use prior to taking the car off the road for a 'quick' tidy up to sell, I had the most fun of all with it. It looked in the worse state it had ever looked, rusty bumpers and bodywork, but a 1776 engine with about 110bhp :-). Hot hatches were always the best bait.......

The subsequent 'quick tidy up' to sell, turned into a 8 month body-off restoration, you know how it is.....! The car, now with gleaming white paintwork and Centreline style wheels, was sold in 1998. This was my last aircooled VW daily driver, I now drive a 'sensible' Passat Estate VR6; great for towing, parts hauling, comfort (sorry!), but more importantly - goes like hell!
