1973 1300 Beetle - 'Trophy Trap' Show Car
A 1973 1300 Beetle purchased in 1988 to restore and modify for my first project car - a Cal Look Beetle. Thought to be in pretty good condition for its price and age, it was soon torn apart to find a 'restoration' and repaint had been carried out to a very poor standard. There was found to be a fair amount of foil tape over rust holes and liberal use of bitumen underseal! Not to be deterred I waded in with the angle grinder, MIG welder and the usual selection of Veng pattern repair panels and genuine panels. The car also received the usual early model panels too, which was the trend back then. I did insist on keeping the upright headlights to maintain a certain modern style, and because the car which influenced by Colin Burnham's '68 Mars red Cal Looker my '73 had to have them too.
The car was finished with a week to spare before Bug Jam 1991. Even though this event was plagued with appalling weather, I did manage to go home with the award of 'Europe's Most Beautiful VW' 1991, as well as 5 other class awards.
Because of pending University commitments I sold the car in November of the same year, a mere 5 months after finishing it! To the best of my knowledge it is still owned by the same person in Northampton.
