1973 1300 Beetle - 'Trophy Trap' Show Car


1973 'CAL-LOOK' VOLKSWAGEN 1300 BEETLE

ORIGINAL OWNER/BUILDER: Andy Parrott, Norwich.
PRESENT OWNER: John Malin, Northampton.

BODY:
MODIFICATIONS:- Shaved bonnet & deck lid handles, welded up & smoothed: fuel filler flap, rear side air vents, exhaust cut outs & aerial hole. Frenched electric aerial. De-seamed door pillars. Dashboard vents, speaker grills, ash tray & switch holes welded up & smoothed; with Sony radio cassette frenched in. 1965 deck lid & bonnet fitted c/w front & rear valances, along with 6v style rear wings and tail lights. Front wings late 12v type, with Nissan side marker turn signals.
PAINT:- Stripped to bare metal, inside & out, ICI 2-pack etch primer, followed by 'gallons' of cellulose primer/filler. Glasurit 2-pack 'Tintable' primer, followed by Glasurit acrylic 'Ford Lavanti Blue' basecoat metallic and Glasurit 2-pack lacquer.

CHASSIS:
FRONT END:- New VW torsion beam with Sway-a-way lowering adjusters, lowered 3", with castor shims & long travel ball joints. 1500 disc brakes and S/S braided hoses, plus shorter Armstrong shocks & Sway-a-way uprated anti-roll bar.
REAR END:- Sway-a-way adjustable spring plates, lowered 2", standard VW shocks and Sway-a-way 'Camber-Compensator'. Standard VW 1300 drums with S/S braided hoses.
STEERING:- Stock VW steering box, anti-bumpsteer kit fitted, and owner made stainless steel tie-rods.
WHEELS/TYRES:- (Front/Rear) 5½" x 15" American Eagle 529's, with 195-50 VR 15 front & 195-60 HR 15 rear Goodyear NCT/Eagle tyres.

DRIVETRAIN:
ENGINE:- 1641cc VW Type 2. 041 VW heads polished & ported with 40 X 36 S/S valves, HD springs & retainers, bolt-up rocker shafts & swivel adjusters. Eurorace 'H' grind high lift cam, standard stroke VW crank. Lightened & eight dowelled flywheel. Melling high volume oil pump, with external oil filter & front mounted 16 row cooler. Dual Dellorto DRLA 40's with K&N filters, electric fuel pump & Filter King regulator. Bosch 009 distributor and ignition. Engine fully blueprinted & balanced. Lots of paint, polished stainless & chrome and billet aluminium components.
TRANSMISSION:- Standard 1300 'box with rigid 200mm clutch, and urethane mounts.

INTERIOR:
Grant steering wheel, Recaro front & standard rear seats, trimmed in pattered/plain blue velour. Drilled standard pedals, billet door handles & winders. VDO Night Design gauges. Sony radio + Sony CD player, Sony 25W front speakers, Pioneer 150W rears + Pioneer 80W tune-up woofer system.

GENERAL:
Car completely rewired by owner in red wire! Flip-up gas tank, on gas strut. Bolts & fasteners - stainless steel Allen headed button and socket caps. All billet aluminium components one-off machined by owner. All work, except exterior paint & upholstery, done by owner/builder.
