Why?!

I first saw the club as an "interested Mum"

When I came as a "taxi" for my five-year-old son.

As I stood and I watched, I started to think-

About times when I taught kids to swim (and not sink!)

I felt I could help, though not sure with what

So I stayed at the side and started to "spot".

While I watched, I heard, and found that I-

Knew what was expected, (and also why!)

I could tell the effect that moving the head

Would have on the travel along the bed.

I saw them progress and establish a style,

With success and achievement there came a small smile.

The "Flyers" grew and the hours became more

But hardly ever was the commitment a chore.

As the children improved it was easy to see

That the pleasure was felt by both them and me.

Some fell by the wayside and new faces came,

But as time went by the reward was the same

Not for the money or gifts do we stay

And give up our time (by the hour and the day)

But to see the pride when something goes right

That "smirk" of achievement is a wonderful sight.

Numbers were growing and officials were sought

I went to record - and then I was "caught"

I trained as a judge and learnt all the rules-

About one-footed landings and deductions for falls.

We started a news letter and went on the "net"

The "friends" idea was the best one yet.

They help with support at events that we hold

With out them refreshments would never be sold

They raised lots of money and bought us a bed

We owe them our "thanks" (though it's not often said!)

Judging again, we now have grade twos

"We need an official that’s higher than you"

A Weekend with Mel and weeks of wait

Then "well done!, you can tariff, now don't be late!"

As an "Area Judge" I advise where I can

And when I think back to where I began.

Five years ago as "the Mum with the car"

I never could guess I would go this far.

But how can I fail to give up my time

When faced with performers who continue to shine,

Who battle and fight and conquer their fears

Showing wisdom and strength in advance of their years

Keep up the good work and continue to smile

It may be a struggle but it's all been worthwhile!
