Bookshop gives a say to author

Front page news report, The Oxford Times and The Oxford Mail and listing, 17th January 2003

OXFORD police were called amid scenes of uproar the last time the philosopher Andrew Malcolm tried to give a talk in the city's Borders bookstore. But it would seem the author's "Borders dispute" is over, with the company inviting him to appear at one of its London stores.

Last October members of the audience were escorted by police from the Borders store in Magdalen Street as Mr Malcolm staged an impromptu sit-in, following the store's decision to cancel his talk. The author accused Borders of depriving him of freedom of speech, while audience members complained they had felt intimidated by staff. Mr Malcolm will finally get to have his say at the Borders Charing Cross Road store on Thursday, January 30, at 7pm.

Mr Malcolm has been involved in a six-year legal dispute with Oxford University after it declined to publish his book Making Names. A Borders spokesman said Mr Malcolm will talk about Making Names and The Remedy, the book charting his court case.
