College arms: "Azure, a lion rampant argent, crowned or, impaling gules, an orle argent"

Founded by John Balliol and Dervorguilla his wife (parents of John Balliol, King of Scotland), some time between the years 1263 and 1268.
In addition to the fellowships established or authorized by the statutes of the College, the Jowett Fellowships were founded in 1906 by James Hozier, second Baron Newlands, in memory of the Revd Benjamin Jowett, Master of the College 1870-93. These are held, with their other fellowships, by Fellows of the College.
The A. L. Smith Memorial Fellowship in History was founded in 1925 in memory of Arthur Lionel Smith, Master 1916-24.
The Craig-Sellar Fellowship was founded in 1931 out of a sum bequeathed by Gerard Henry Craig-Sellar.
The Vincent Massey Fellowship was founded in 1932 by a gift from the Massey Foundation in Canada.
In 1933 Oliver Gatty, Fellow of the College 1931-3, who died in 1940. founded a Fellowship in Biology
The Andrew Bradley Fellowship, for research in English Literature, was founded in 1936 under the will of Andrew Cecil Bradley. The funds of the Fellowship have been supplemented by a bequest from I. C. Maxwell.
The Duncan Campbell Macgregor Fellowship in Literae Humaniores was founded in 1943 by Mrs Christine Margaret Macgregor in memory of her husband Duncan Campbell Macgregor.
The Fawkes Memorial Fellowship in History was founded in 1946 by Miss Vivienne de Maupas in memory of her uncle, the Revd Alfred Fawkes (1868- 73).
The Dyson Fellowship in (Greek Culture was founded in 1960 from a bequest from Reginald Joseph Dyson (1892-4).
The Blanesburgh Fellowship was founded in 1962 out of a gift from Sir William McEwan Younger (1924-8) in memory of his uncle Lord Blanesburgh.
The Fairfax Fellowship in Philosophy was founded in 1963 by W. O. Fairfax (1921-5) and J. O. Fairfax (1952-5) of Sydney, New South Wales.
The Herbert Samuel Fellowship in Philosophy was founded in 1964 by friends Of Viscount Samuel (1889-93), Visitor of the College 1946-57.
The J. H. Hofmeyr Fellowship was founded in 1964 by South African donors in memory of the Rt Hon. J. H. Hofmeyr, the first Principal of the University of Witwatersrand.
The Lord Thomson of Fleet Fellowship in Economics was founded in 1965 by Lord Thomson of Fleet.
The Billmeir Fellowship in Mathematics was founded in 1965 as part of the 700th Anniversary Fund.
The Robert Maxwell Fellowship in Politics was founded in 1965 by I. Robert Maxwell, MC.
The Felix Frankfurter Memorial Fellowship in Law was founded in 1966 in memory of Felix Frankfurter, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States of America, 1939-62.
The Trustees of the 700th Anniversary Fund established various Fellowships in 1965 and 1966: the Septcentenary Fellowships in Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, and two Junior Research Fellowships.
The Lewis Namier Junior Research Fellowship in History was founded under the will of Lady Namier in 1973 in memory of Professor Sir Lewis Namier.
The Younger Fellowship in Modern History was founded in 1985 by Sir William McEwan Younger (1924-8) as part of the Dervorguilla Appeal.
The Waters Fellowship was established in memory of William Alexander Waters, Fellow and Benefactor of the College.
The Jervis-Smith Fellowship was established in 1986 in commemoration of Major Eustace John Jervis-Smith, Commoner and Benefactor of the College.
The Edward S. Richards-FME-Lubbock Senior Research Fellowship in Management was founded in 1991 from gifts by Mr Clive Richards, and The Foundation for Management Education in conjunction with the Trustees of the Maurice Lubbock Memorial Fund.
The Eastern Electricity Fellowship in Engineering was founded by Eastern Group as part of the Jowett Centenary Appeal.
The Ernest Butten Professorship was founded by the Sundridge Park Charitable Trust, a charity associated with the PA Consulting Group.
The Colyer Fergusson Fellowship in Medieval History was founded in 2000 by the Colyer-Fergusson Trustees.
The corporate designation of the College is 'The Master and Scholars of Balliol College in the University of Oxford'.
