College arms: "Sable, on a cross engrailed argent a lion passant gules between four leopards' faces azure, on a chief or a rose of the third, seeded or, barbed vert, between two Cornish choughs proper"
THIS foundation, traditionally known as 'The House', projected on a magnificent scale by Cardinal Wolsey, was established by King Henry VIII in 1546, and consisted of a Dean, eight Canons, a hundred students (to which number one was added in 1664 by a benefaction from William Thurston, Esq.), eight chaplains, a schoolmaster, an organist, eight clerks, and eight choristers. The House is now governed by statutes which became law in 1963.
Under these statutes the Governing Body consists of a Dean, six Canons (of whom four are university professors and one is the Archdeacon of Oxford), and a body of Students (equivalent to fellows).
The Governing Body may elect each year at least one Junior Research Fellow who shall undertake to perform some definite literary or scientific work for a period of three years, and may be reappointed for a further period. At present the total tenure is four years.
The Governing Body may elect each year Senior Scholars, who are qualified to carry out work at graduate level, and who shall enter upon some definite course of literary, educational, scientific or professional study or training. These scholarships are tenable for two years and may be renewed for one further year.
The House has available, as the result of a number of benefactions, funds with which to make awards or prizes to undergraduate and graduate members in residence and for the alleviation of hardship.
There is also an Organ Scholarship, founded in memory of Christopher Tatton.
Two Academical Clerkships in choral singing are also offered every year.
The corporate designation of the House is 'The Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral Church of Christ in Oxford of the Foundation of King Henry the Eighth'.
In the following lists, the symbol
