College arms: "Gules two torches inflamed in saltire proper: on a Chief Argent, between Two Roses of a field barbed and seeded an open Book also proper" THE MANCHESTER ACADEMY was founded in Manchester in 1786 in succession to the Warrington Academy 'to provide systematic education for divines, and... instruction for the other learned professions, and for civil and commercial life'. The College moved to York in 1802 and to Manchester in 1840, in which year by Royal Letter-in-Council it became a collegiate society of the University of London. The College subsequently moved to London and finally to Oxford in 1889. Among the distinguished tutors of the College were Joseph Priestley, who discovered oxygen, John Dalton, who was famous for his atomic theory, and James Martineau, the nineteenth-century philosopher and theologian. The College has had a long association with Harvard University, sharing a common Unitarian heritage; at the beginning of this century several Harvard professors, including William James, gave lectures at the College. Bishop Berkeley lived and died in one of the buildings now occupied by the College and Albert Schweitzer gave an organ recital and lectured in the College. Harris Manchester College became a Permanent Private Hall of the University in January 1990 and a full chartered College of the University in January 1996. The College only accepts mature students to read for Oxford undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
