JESUS COLLEGE was founded by Queen Elizabeth I by Letters Patent of 27 June 1571, on the petition of Dr Hugh Price. Its corporate designation is 'The Principal, Fellows, and Scholars of Jesus College, within the City and University of Oxford, of Queen Elizabeth's Foundation'.

By the College statutes the foundation consists of a Principal and such Fellows and Scholars as shall have been duly elected in accordance with the provisions of the statutes.

Fellows are termed Professorial, Official, Senior Research, Junior Research, Emeritus, Honorary or Supernumerary. The Jesus Professor of Celtic, the Professor of Zoology, the Professor of Paediatrics, and the Professor of Educational Psychology are Professorial Fellows, holding professorships or readerships allocated to the College.

Scholarships and Exhibitions and Prizes are awarded each year for distinguished performance in University examinations, and for those with a Welsh connection. Meyricke Scholarships are available at both undergraduate and graduate level. Graduate Scholarships are awarded annually and an Organ Scholar is elected biannually.

Sankey Scholarships, founded by the late Viscount Sankey, may be awarded to members of the College to assist them in being called to the Bar.

The Governing Body may award Minor Exhibitions to any of its resident members in need of financial aid, or to assist them to pursue any special course of study in this country and abroad which it considers desirable, and College Prizes are awarded for essays or meritorious work in various subjects, while the P. W. Dodd Benefaction enables the College to assist its undergraduates to travel abroad for purposes not directly connected with their studies.
