College arms: "Or, on a chevron between in chief two talbots passant and in base a bell all azure, a portcullis of the field"
LADY MARGARET HALL was founded in 1878 as the first 'academic hall' for women in Oxford, and the first students were admitted in 1879. Its members, like those of the other women's colleges, became members of the University in 1920. In 1960 Lady Margaret Hall became a full college of the University under the title of 'The College of The Lady Margaret in the University of Oxford, commonly known as Lady Margaret Hall'. In 1978 new College statutes were approved in order that men should become members of the College, both at senior and junior level.
There are the following classes of fellows: Official, Professorial, Supernumerary, Domus, Research, Emeritus, Honorary, Visiting, and Foundation. There are five Research Fellowships: these are the Talbot Research Fellowship (1938), the Florey Research Fellowship in support of Science (1952), the EPA Cephalosporin Research Fellowship in Chemical, Biological and Medical Sciences (1983), a Fellowship in Wildlife Research and Management (1986), and the Susette Taylor Research Fellowship (1923) which is offered from time to time for independent study abroad.
Graduates in residence may be awarded scholarships from the Goodman and JexBlake funds for academic excellence; other benefactions enable small grants to be offered to graduates for research expenses. Graduates and undergraduates who encounter unexpected financial difficulty may be helped from the funds bequeathed to the College. Scholarships and Exhibitions are awarded for academic excellence to undergraduates in residence.
In the following lists, the symbol
